Mozilla Foundation announces Directed Giving program

The Mozilla Foundation today announces their new directed giving program. When you donate to the Mozilla Foundation, you now have the option of directing your donations to one of four selected projects (Bugzilla, SeaMonkey, Camino, and Mozilla accessibility for people with disabilities). You can also choose to make a traditional unrestricted donation as well. The Mozilla Foundation will take note of your choice, and keep track of how much money has been designated for each project. They will then work with the people responsible for each project and come up with some worthy project-related initiatives to fund using those designated donations.

This directed giving program was created as a way to give people more ways to be involved in and engaged with the Mozilla project, and the Mozilla Foundation also wants to give the various individual projects within the overall Mozilla project the chance to promote themselves and further grow their communities of supporters. If you've donated to the Mozilla Foundation before, we thank you for your past donation and encourage you to consider making a new donation designated for one of these projects. If you haven't donated yet, please consider supporting one of these worthy initiatives.

Mozilla Launches Internet Mail and Communications Initiative

Mozilla today announced a new initiative to stimulate innovation in Internet mail and communications. Mozilla plans to develop Internet communications software based on the Thunderbird product, code and brand. The new initiative also aims to nurture a robust developer ecosystem in order to drive improvements through open source and community innovation, in the tradition of the Firefox web browser.

Dr. David Ascher, currently CTO and VP Engineering of ActiveState, will join Mozilla to establish a new company focused on mail. Ascher has been an active member of the Mozilla community since 2000, initially as the lead of Komodo, a Mozilla-based integrated development environment (IDE). He is an established leader in the open source community, including his role as a director of the Python Software Foundation.

"Innovating in mail and communications advances our vision of choice across the spectrum of Internet software," said Mitchell Baker, Chair, Mozilla Foundation. "David has been a respected member of the Mozilla community for many years and we're excited that he is joining Mozilla to lead this important effort."

In July 2007, Baker delivered a call to action soliciting community feedback about the future of Thunderbird. After an active public discussion, the Mozilla Foundation board approved the creation of a distinct new Mozilla Foundation subsidiary dedicated to developing, innovating and improving Internet mail and communication software.

Mozilla will provide US$3 million seed funding to establish this new company.

Millions of people around the world rely on Thunderbird as their primary mail application. Nothing will change for current Thunderbird users. Mozilla will continue to provide Thunderbird users with regular security and stability updates as it establishes its new initiative, and remains committed to the needs of Thunderbird users.

Firefox Community Beta Program

During the run up to Firefox 2, we released beta builds and release candidates for wide testing and feedback as part of a community beta program. Anyone who downloaded and installed these pre-release versions of Firefox became part of this beta program and was automatically updated to the Firefox 2 final release.

To ensure continued improvement in the quality of Firefox 2, we are now applying the same program to our security and stability release process for Firefox 2. Starting within the next 24 hours, everyone who participated in the beta process will be offered a pre-release version of the next security and stability update.

If you are participating in this program, thanks for your continued help. Please report any problems or issues at our community feedback web site.

The final release of Firefox 2.0.0.3 will take place shortly after we complete wide testing through this program. All press inquiries should be directed to press@mozilla.com.

To exclude yourself from the beta program, simply download and install the latest stable production release of Firefox.

In the near future, we will be accepting additional people into this community beta program. More information on how to join will be posted soon to Mozilla Developer News.

Technical Note:
You can identify if you are part of the beta program by following these instructions:
1. Launch Firefox.
2. In the location bar where you usually enter a web address, type: about:config
3. In the Filter field, enter: app.update.channel then press the enter key.
4. If you see the value app.update.channel set to “beta” you are enrolled in the beta program.

SeaMonkey 1.0.6 and SeaMonkey 1.1 Beta Released

The SeaMonkey Council is pleased to announce two new releases simultaneously:

The SeaMonkey Council recommends that all users upgrade to this stable, well-tested version.

Second, the SeaMonkey project has been working hard on improving its software even further, adding new features such as tab previews, spell checking in the browser, an e-mail tagging system, an improved Linux startup script, better new mail notifications, an updated Chatzilla IRC client, and more. A new preview showing off those improvements, SeaMonkey 1.1 Beta, was also released today. This version is intended for developers and testers (but not yet for end users). The SeaMonkey Council encourages interested people to test the Beta and help identify the remaining bugs. Be sure to read the release notes before testing though, as they list not only the new features but also a number of known issues. Any problems that are not already known should be reported to the developers via Bugzilla so that the final SeaMonkey 1.1 release can continue the traditional high quality expected from the Mozilla suite and the SeaMonkey 1.0 series.
