Status Update #228 — Monday May 3, 2004
Mozilla 1.7 Release Candidate 1
Mozilla 1.7 Release Candidate 1, is now available. Two more release candidates are expected before the final version of 1.7 is launched. A localization freeze will come into force when RC 2 is released.
Mozilla Thunderbird 0.6
Mozilla Thunderbird 0.6 has been released. This latest version of the standalone mail and newsgroups client features an installer for Windows users, a new default theme on Mac OS X, an improved junk mail detection algorithm, new brand artwork, support for the IMAP IDLE command, server-wide newsgroup filters, Secure Password Authentication using NTLM for POP, IMAP and SMTP and many other enhancements.
Camino
Camino has branched for 0.8. Nightly builds from the branch are now available (look for the directories ending -0.8 in ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/camino/nightly/) and a beta is expected shortly.
Default Build
On Friday, the default build configuration will be changed from a debug build to an optimized build (bug 54828).
Extensions for Mozilla Firefox 0.9+ and Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7+
Ben Goodger has posted a preliminary document that describes how to package extensions for the new extension system being introduced with Mozilla Firefox 0.9 and Mozilla Thunderbird 0.7.
Newsgroups
While the Mozilla Foundation has the required hardware to begin hosting the Mozilla newsgroups itself (they are currently run by Netscape), it does not have the necessary resources. Experienced news admins should volunteer in bug 215294.
RDF
The RDF module is now owned by Axel Hecht, who is joined by new peers Benjamin Smedberg and Ben Goodger.
Filters
Server-wide newsgroup filters are now supported (bug 19403).
Find in This Page…
The Find in This Page… feature now locates text in <input>
and
<textarea>
elements
(bug 58305).
FTP
There is now a UI for FTP upload (bug 24867).
UIEvent
Interface
Basic support for the DOM 2 UIEvent
interface and support for
DOMActivate
for HTML form control elements has been implemented
(bug 60212).
Junk Mail Controls
There is now an option to mark incoming junk mail as read (bug 193625).
Phishing
The dots in usernames and passwords encoded in URLs are now escaped (so http://www.mozilla.org:roadmap.html@evilscam.net/ becomes http://www%2Emozilla%2Eorg%3Aroadmap%2Ehtml@evilscam.net/), making phishing scams easier to detect (bug 240754).
XPI Software Installation
XPI software installs can no longer be triggered while a page is loading, reducing the threat of 'drive-by' downloads (bug 238684).
Mozilla Thunderbird Mail Notification on Mac OS X
On Mac OS X, the Mozilla Thunderbird icon on the Dock now changes when new mail arrives (bug 86553).
Relicensing
A lot of Mozilla code has been relicensed under the MPL/GPL/LGPL tri-license recently (bug 236613).
Tree Status
The trunk is currently open (but check tinderbox for the latest status). Checkins to the 1.7 branch require approval from drivers@mozilla.org.
